BEGINNER. You need to know how to knit and purl to take this class.
If you are wanting to learn more about fibres, about how knitted fabric is constructed, how to read your fabric and fix mistakes then this 6 week/ 9 hour class is for you.
Yarn Tasting Shawl is a design and kit from WildWestDye, Six different yarns, six different textures and a great way to learn all about different yarns, fibres and textures.
In this 6 week class we will discuss/ learn and explore the following:
- Different yarn weights and fibres
- How to read your fabric; right side vs wrong side, whereabouts in a pattern you are, counting rows.
- What happens when you knit or purl on the right or wrong side of the fabric
- How to work yarn overs, KFB (knit front & back) K2tog (knit 2 together) SSK/ left leaning decrease shown in 3 techniques so you can choose the one you want to use.
- How to work simple and complex eyelet/ yarn over/ lace patterns.
- How to fix mistakes like missed yarn overs.
- Stretchy yarn over bind off
- How to sew in your ends neatly.
- Blocking techniques and best practices
Fall dates:
Saturday October 14th, 21st, 28, November 4th, 18th and 25th. 9:30 - 11am. No class on Saturday 11th November.
Materials required (not included):
Yarn Tasting Shawl kit by WildWestDye - choose your kit here.
Needles in: 3.75mm/ 4mm/ 4.5mm and 6.5mm and a 32 inch cord.
General notions; scissors, stitch markers etc..
Class one: Starting your shawl - we will discuss worsted and DK weight yarn, all about plys and start your journey on how to successfully read your knitting.
Homework: Complete sections 1 & 2.
Class two: Section 3: We will discuss sport weight yarn and the properties of silk. You will learn the dot stitch and how to know where you are in the pattern.
Homework: Complete section 3.
Class three: Section 4: We will discuss fingering weight yarn, how to work yarn overs, how to read the correct placement of yarn overs within the pattern.
Homework Complete section 4.
Class four: Section 5: We will discuss singles yarn and the properties of cashmere, work the more complex eyelet pattern and continue on with how to read your fabric and what happens when you work a knit or a purl stitch on a right and wrong side.
Homework Complete section 5.
Class five: Section 6: We will discuss Bulky yarns work the lace pattern and understand how to read the pattern.
Homework Complete section 6.
Class six: We will work the stretchy yarn over bind off technique, learn how to neatly sew in your ends and discuss blocking techniques.

Make up classes are not available, if you miss a session, Rebecca will do her best to get you back on track.
